Since I took such a long hiatus from posting pictures of my food, which I know is what you all are really here for, I’ve decided to add a few from my backlog. When I stopped taking frequent pictures, I started taking better pictures of better food, so don’t think that this sample is (necessarily) representative of either my eating habits or my photography skills.

Now, look at food!

The first meal of August: I moved away from the poblanos briefly, although I suspect I'll go back one day. Also, slicing these in half looks nice but was really just a ploy to get them all to fit into the pan.

As an adult, I haven’t experienced spring break in, well, 6 years. In fact, working for a university as a young person can be terrible, because so many people ask you what you’re doing for spring break, and every time you have to say, “Coming to work” when you know that twenty-somethings are flocking toward sunnier climes by the thousand. Oh, well.

So now it’s my turn.

Sunday: Funday!

No, this isn't actually what I ate for dinner. But I could have. They were bigger than my hands!

The above picture was actually taken Saturday night, when I was baking cookies for a friend’s birthday. I haven’t made peanut-butter cookies in a while… let’s just say they were amazing. Chewy in the center, slightly crunchy on the outside. Over all I was quite pleased with them as gift quality.

And I’m late posting this. Don’t worry, though: I still ate the same things regardless of when it hits the Internet.

This was a rough week. I had a couple exams, a project, and a lot of non-school non-work volunteer duties to take care of. I’ll admit, dinners suffered slightly. But hey, we still ate!

Also, Sunday was memorable for both the quality and the quantity of eating, so at least we started off strong!

Sunday: Wings

Good thing the only stuff we ever store in our fridge is vegetables and leftovers! This took up pretty much all the extra space!

Today was not a day for regular eating. No. Today was a day that I did not have work OR class, AND a day that U of M played basketball, so we decided to have people over and make wings. In advance, so I had time to fill my fridge the night before with twenty pounds of marinating chicken in various sauces.

A Night of Abject Failure

Hello, Friends.

I’m sure you’ve noticed that a very large majority of the posts on this blog are about successes in the kitchen. As we all know, this is not how the world works. Sometimes, we fail. Sometimes we fail more than once. And sometimes that story is funnier than the preceding victories. This one’s for you folks with a little bit of the Schadenfreude. You know who you are.

I was feeling pretty positive about my chances of having a good weekend today. I was sure that I’d built up enough good karma giving 8 of my classmates free lunch (as it turns out, such things are real!) and then topping off the bucket of positivity by finding a wallet that a girl had just dropped and calling out her name in the middle of the street to give it back to her. All true. To me this means maybe today something good will happen to me. Like maybe I will make delicious, delicious rugelach successfully. And then eat it.

The night started off innocently enough. I made stuffed peppers for dinner with sausage and rice and chopped serrano peppers. I was hesitant about chopping the peppers without gloves on because that’s come back to bite me in the past, but it was only two peppers, so I just went with it. Dinner was tasty and full of nutrients. I was so happy with the results that I decided to bake cookies for football-with-friends tomorrow. (Go Blue! What, we’re not playing? Hmmph. Go Blue basketball!)

I had made a pie crust earlier in the evening in anticipation of some kind of baking adventure. (Using this easy recipe.) So I broke out half of it and my trusty tub of Nutella and set about making rugelach. It’s impossibly easy, people. You roll out the pie crust, spread whatever you want on top of it, then cut it into triangles and roll them up. And when “whatever you want” is Nutella, everybody wins. Except people with nut allergies.

Aren’t they just the cutest?

Dirty Cookies

Yup. The title of this post pretty much says it all. Don’t believe me? Check out the picture:

Got caffeine? (Don’t complain about picture quality. Craig’s still on baby-hiatus, but he’ll be back.)

See? Those look nasty, huh? They are: nasty GOOD! I got the idea from a handy little margarita cookie recipe, and just kind of winged it. As per my usual. Stop pretending to be surprised. The margarita cookies are good, by the way, but I like my version a lot because they’re more of an adult cookie. Not overly sweet, but definitely full of flavor. REAL conversation between me and my friend Skipper after he tried one:

Skipper: “This is the best cookie I’ve had.”
Me: “What, today? This week?”
Skipper: “No, ever. I don’t like super sweet cookies—in fact I usually don’t eat cookies—but this one is really good.”

So there you have it. How could you not make these cookies after reading that?
